Music at St Andrews
Music has played a vital role in churches through the centuries. Here at the
Parish of Hornchurch we pride ourselves on the quality of our musicians and the
great work they do in furthering God's Kingdom.
The Choir
A four part SATB choir which can divide into SSAATTBB when required. The
treble line of up to 20 boys and girls is supported by 3 Altos, 7 Tenors, 5
Basses. Thus a robed choir is provided at both main Sunday services, and
additionally at Prayer Book Mattins once a month.
We are affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and take part in RSCM
activities when our weekend duties, including numerous weddings, allow us to do
so. The CTS Training Scheme is in use and we are regular supporters of the RSCM
one-day and weekend courses for young singers.
We have at present (Winter 2000) seven Bishops Choristers.
The Organ
Installed by H. W. Speechly in 1913 and partly rebuilt by N P Mander in 1966,
now maintained by Colin Jilks and Associates.
There are three manuals, a standard CCC-F pedal board, and 25 speaking stops
which include some borrowing.
Because there is now no manual double, as there was on the original
instrument, and because the Swell sub-octave is only effective down to TC, plans
are in hand to convert the Swell 8 ft. Oboe to 16 ft. Contra Oboe.
