The name of the charity may be familiar to you as we have seen their shops in our High Street, but do you know what they do? Scope is a leading charity who champions and helps those members of society who have dishabilles.
In 1952 the charity was formed by some parents and a social worker who wanted their disabled children to have equal access to education. In 1957 the first employment officer supported disabled people in getting their first jobs, a service that continues today. By 1962 a group of disabled people organized their first clubs for leisure activities and by 1970 they had opened their first charity shop for volunteers to work and raise money for the charity, there are now 190 shops.
Since 2004 the charity has been campaigning and working with various organisations to encourage employers to work with disabled people, which continues to this day. They have been at the forefront of awareness campaigns and support for those living with conditions, not all are visible but no less debilitating or restricting.
This year, 2022, marks the 70th Anniversary of the founding of this charity. They continue to help and guide those in the UK who need it. If you wish to discover more about their work please go to the Scope website
If you are interested in donating to them, you can drop a cheque to the Parish Office clearly marked on the back ‘Charity of the month Scope’ and made payable to ‘Hornchurch PCC’.
